Black Women Film’s ADVANCED CINEMATOGRAPHY WORKSHOP!

ELeVate your Career!

Our Annual Advance Cinematography Workshop is a deep dive into all things camera! Over a four-day period, Black Women Film selects six aspiring emerging and mid-career cinematographers to work alongside professional DP Mentors for one-on-one training on a professional film set! This workshop is designed for Black women identified, nonbinary and trans people, across Canada, who have experience and relevant training working behind the camera but who are looking for additional opportunities to hone their craft as a cinematographer.

Chosen applicants will be partnered in pairs and will work with a writer and director to shoot a scene from a long-form series script featuring two actors in an interior scene. The chosen DP Participants from BWF will be teamed up with top industry professionals from Hire Higher who will serve as DP Mentors, to help guide and advise each group on the entire process: from prep (shot listing, lighting plans, gear prep, etc.) to the shoot (working with actors, blocking the scene, responding to the challenges of a shoot day, etc.), alongside a director and experienced crew (gaffer, grip, camera assistant, etc.)

This workshop will be supported by Netflix with the use of studio space and pre-existing set builds so that each team will learn advanced techniques for lighting on a soundstage and how to direct a camera crew effectively as a Director of Photography.  Camera equipment and lighting will be provided by William F Whites, and each selected participant for the program will become an official sponsor of WFW Camera and will receive access to a basic camera package for the rest of the calendar year.  The Hire Higher Collective will also be available for any further mentorship needs after the workshop wrap-up.

For all applicants outside of Ontario, we will cover all travel and accommodations for the duration of the workshop.
