BIG UP PRODUCER’S RESIDENCY
MONTREAL / TORONTO EXCHANGE

Calling all mid-career Black women identified producers across Toronto and Montreal! Black Women Film is launching their 3rd Annual BIG UP Producers Residence with the goal to support the development of 4 Ontario and 4 Quebec producers working on projects in tv, film, scripted or unscripted in the first stages of development, who are interested in building their business and co-production opportunities for the future.

If you are seeking the opportunity to :

  • - come together with other talented Black women both in Montreal and Toronto

    - receive mentorship to take your projects to the next level

  • - take the time to vision personal strategies for the future on all expenses paid retreat and industry weekend

  • - pitch to potential funders and broadcasters - this program is for you!

Sponsored by Telefilm Canada, OYA Black Arts Coalition, Government of Canada and Ontario Creates this exciting incubator is perfect for producers with some experience under the belts who are interested in developing their business strategies and/or reach of their production companies while developing new English language projects in tv or film. 

This incubator will include the following with all travel and accommodation expenses included: 

April 11 - 14, 2024
Opening Retreat & Visioning 

(one hour outside for Montreal - accommodation, food & travel expenses covered for all) 

May 2 - 4, 2024
Toronto Industry Field trip & Screening

Includes VIP meetings with Bell Fund, National Film Board & Telefilm Canada, 

Hot Docs screening and meetings with Elevation Pictures, Hire Higher & Netflix

(Accommodation and travel expenses covered for Montreal based producers)

Closing Pitch & Party 

Toronto - East Room

All producers pitch their development projects to a panel of industry leaders, producers and local broadcasters.


Over the Course of the Residency :

Small Group Mentorships in person and via zoom 

24/7 Co-work Space Access - April - June, 2024
Toronto - East Room - King st
Montreal - Notman House - Le Plateau (To be confirmed)

Weekly Industry Guest Presentations (every Thursday) in person and via zoom

  • Topics will be tailored to the needs of successful applicants and could include development strategies, alternative funding models, tax credits, intra-provincial business, creating the perfect pitch, Budgeting and finances, branding and promotion, Quebec industry vs Toronto industry, and more!

You must be able to attend all key dates (retreat, field and pitch) listed above - mentor groups and presentation dates can be adjusted to meet the needs of the collective group.

Mentors and pitch panel will be selected to match the type of projects you are developing.

  • Your application must include request for bio, CV, past experience, links to one work that best illustrates your producing work now AND recorded video introducing yourself in English and why you’d like to join the program.

BIG UP will take place in Toronto and offers a maximum of 12 successful participants: 

  • 2 months of co-working space or shared office access 

  • 2 to 1 tailored mentorship (twice a month in person) 

  • Guest Speakers & Training Access

  • All expense paid accommodation, travel for Montreal & Toronto weekend intensive and retreat

Applicants must be Canadian residents currently residing in Ontario or Montreal and have a English language project in development or production to be eligible for the BIG UP PROGRAM.
